The Free Application for Federal Student
Aid, better known as the (FAFSA) is the
form students need to fill out if they want
to obtain any financial aid from the
federal government to help pay for
college.
You should know the FAFSA is free, so you
don’t need to pay anyone to prepare it for
you.
You will need to submit a new FAFSA
before each academic year in which you
want to receive aid.
Be sure to use a permanent email
address on the form, not your high school
email, so you can use your FAFSA
account throughout college.
If you are going to best way to complete
the (FAFSA) its best that you do it early,
online. The first day you can begin the
application is October 1, in the year prior
to the year you want to attend school, and
the deadline runs through June 30 of the
following year. However, keep in mind
some schools and states have their own
deadlines for filing. So you may want to
contact your school(s) of interest and
find out their deadline(s). You can check

THINGS YOU NEED
Your Social Security Number
Your Alien Registration Number
(if you are not a U.S. citizen)
Your federal income tax returns, W-2s,
and other records of money earned.
Bank statements and records of
investments (if applicable)
Records of untaxed income
(if applicable)
An FSA ID to sign electronically.
If you are a dependent student, then
you will also need most of the above
information for your parent(s).
THE PROCESS
Create an account (FSA ID). You must
create an FSA ID username and password
in order to sign the FAFSA form online,
which is highly recommended. The
process if quick and straightforward.
If your parent are required to report
their information on your FAFSA form,
they need to create their own FSA ID in
order to sign your FAFSA form online.
Create a save key. A save key is a
temporary password and it will allow you
to return to the FAFSA and complete
it if you can’t complete it in it’s entirety in
one setting. You can also share this key
with your parents if they need to access to
yours FAFSA to complete their parts.
Personal Information. Once you are in
your account, the next thing you will do
is enter your personal information. This
includes your full name, date of birth, and
contact information, as well as your Alien
Registration Number or driver’s license
number, if you have these.
You will also be asked to enter your
Social Security number, so make sure you
have it handy because you can’t complete
your FAFSA without it.
Other information will be things like your
citizenship status, marital status, and
where you went to high school
Money, Money, Money. Most students
in high school won’t have any finances
to report, seeing as how they are still
dependent on their parents. However,
for those who do have income that is
reported to the IRS, this is where you
will enter that information. Remember,
you will need your tax information from
the two previous years.
Your parents may be able to use the IRS
Data Retrieval Tool to automatically
import their tax data. They will just click
“Link to IRS” and follow the directions to
import their tax information.
College Selection. You want to choose
which schools will receive your FAFSA, and
you will have the option of choosing up to
ten colleges. However, if you’re not sure
which ones to select, just select your top
choices., and, remember, you can always
go back and make changes.
Sign & Submit. Now that you have filled
in all the required information all that’s
left to do is sign, which is done by using
your personal FSA In addition, if your
parents added their information to your
FAFSA, then, depending on their marital
status, one, or both, will be required to
sign with their FSA ID.
Finally, all you have to do is hit the
submit button, which will take you to a
confirmation page. Be sure to print it out
and save it for your records.
