The majority of students and parents
believe that the only way you can get
a scholarship is if you are at the top of
your class, with mostly straight A’s, and
high test scores. Obviously, it’s true
that helps, but there are a variety of
scholarships you can receive that are
not based on academic achievement.
Here you can explore the different
scholarship opportunities that are
available.
ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Academic scholarships, better known as
merit scholarships, are usually given to
students with high GPAs, who took
part in several extracurricular activities
and have well-rounded applications.
These scholarships are the most sought
after because they typically have the
highest payouts and are considered
very prestigious. If you know your
grades and test scores are not the best,
applying for these scholarships is
probably a waste of time, seeing as
how the competition is very stiff.
ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Are you good at basketball, football,
cheerleading, tennis, or any other sport?
Then you may want to consider applying
for an athletic scholarship. Emphasis
is not focused on your grades, but more
on how well you excel in the sport in
which you participate. To be honest,
you can basically find a scholarship for
almost every single sport you can
conceive. So, if you are at the top of
your sport, an athletic scholarship is the
way to go.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
If you love to give to others or back to
your community then you definitely
need to consider a community service
scholarship. If you haven’t already, you
should consider signing up for a
community service project or do some
volunteering. These actions will help
bolster your chances of being rewarded
with a scholarship based on your
philanthropy and humanitarianism.
PERSONAL BACKGROUND
Personal background scholarships
are awarded to certain groups of
people usually based on criteria such
as gender, race, or sexual orientation.
For example, there are scholarships
that only men qualify and ones where
only women qualify. To take it even
further, there are scholarships that
only black, gay, disabled women can
qualify. These scholarships can be
hard to find, but if you use utilize a
scholarship finder, and you enter as
much specific, personal information
about yourself into the search engine,
you might be surprised at the results
for which you qualify.
AFFILIATION SCHOLARSHIPS
Affiliation scholarships do consider
things such as academic merit and
community involvement, but the main
criteria is that you or a family member
must be affiliated with a certain group,
whether that be a specific company,
club, union, community, etc. Now
would be a good time to see if any
group of which you are a member
provides funding for college.
